11 years ago, for the last month of high school classes, I refused to wear shoes at school. Why? Who knows. I just remember being surprised that not a single person commented on it, especially since being barefoot was forbidden in the dress code.
Ha! Several years ago, my wife and I were having dinner at a restaurant in South Africa with an Afrikaner friend and his wife. For some reason, he started talking about how schoolchildren don't wear shoes in his community. To illustrate, he pulled aside a random server, who was perhaps in his late teens or early twenties, and asked him if he wore shoes when he was schoolchild. Of course not, he answered.
