I'm glad to see we are not alone in our gardening and brooding interests. Next up: keeping bees! 🐝 Does anybody have any tips or resources for beginners?

No experience yet but it's something we are also interested in. Always loved the Flow hives but @black6_ shared this video with @SirSpencer:

A much more budget friendly way to begin!

@Laurien there are dozens of plastic 5 gallon water jugs sitting at work which are the "property" of the water service that hasn't run since COVID. my boss gave me the OK to bring at least some of them home if i make an honest effort to get the water service coming back 😀 @Tjunta @mouseybear @SirSpencer

@Laurien @Tjunta @mouseybear @SirSpencer here are our girls right now getting ready for possible rain (ok, this is how they act when they're not getting ready for rain, too 🙃)

my human resources painted the middle nuc box

@Laurien @mouseybear @black6_ @SirSpencer I'm such a mark 😆 have to admit the part where homeboy is chilling and reading a book with the hive behind is head looks great

I took a 3 day class from this guy a few years back. There's nothing like catching a swarm of bees for yourself!

This guy focuses on the Top Bar hive. However, the bees in my area (coastal) prefer the Warre hive.

"Backyard Hive"

We also took classes from the lady who was in "Queen of the Sun" documentary, in Battleground, Wa. (supper hippy lady) She had a lot of good info though and held reg. classes.

Amazon Prime for viewing.

@Tjunta @mouseybear this is still on the unstarted list. I have some equipment but I need to secure epinephrine for family that's allergic.

Awesome! Congrats on getting bees. We are patiently waiting for our new arrivals. Should be here within the month.
Advice and tips: bees learn to recognize your face so the more you visit with them the more friendly they are.
Do not wear black if you're going to open the hive, they will mistake you for a bear and attack. I did not believe this but learned the hard way.
Make sure they have a water source. I use a chicken waterer with rocks in red drinking area to stand on.

@Tjunta @mouseybear I learned very quickly that the "gentle honeybee" meme was a myth. In the early spring they don't really care about your presence but as the season progresses they become quite viscous. Don't skimp on protective clothing.
